Not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be - Aeon in Flux

Aeon in Flux
Well hey look, it's a trailer for the live-action version of Aeon Flux. I was never holding out any hope for this, because I was such a fan of the creepy-bizarre feel of the cartoons, and I not only knew they couldn't produce the visuals in a live-action version, I doubted they'd even try. The trailer does look kind of interesting, but at the same time… well, it's shiny and high-techy and different-looking and all (though it's also a bit like an Underworld sequel with sunlight and soldiers and Minority Report gloss instead of werewolves), but given the degree that it looks like it has a linear plot that actually makes sense, what does it really have to do with the source material? I bet she doesn't even die and fail horrifically at the end of the movie, then come back without explanation in the sequel.

Really, though, I don't care if the movie is good, bad, or beyond the boundaries of all previously known degrees of terrible, if it provides an impetus for someone to get all the Aeon Flux cartoons out on DVD.

I'm-a feelin': thoughtful

Biggest question for me...How on earth are they going to do her hair? Answer? Somehow, just not as satisfying. Also doesn't have the raw-bonedness (or emaciation) of the original. But then, I guess compromises have to be made for a new medium.

Yeah, that's what I was going to say. Everything is too pretty, and I saw the Matrix already.

The Matrix wasn't nearly this BRIGHT.

I don't like the new outfit. I'm really pissed of that the bitch takes the part and signs the contract having seen the cartoon and then bitches about her costume being too sexy. AAaaaaargh!

Hadn't heard about that. Where'd you get that from?

(Incidentally, that's my favorite I Harth Darth strip, and every time I see this icon, I giggle. Especially at Yoda's silent blinking at the end.)

There was an interview in Entertainment Weekly about the costume change. She actually said that she had seen the cartoon and it wasn't till she was given the costume on set that she refused to go with it.

I love "Aye, there's the Nub" best but this is my newer favorite. I need someone to paste together "Gone Fishing 1&2" and Home Again 1&2" for me so I can change to that (someday I will have a paid account with more icon space and I will have the ability to animate myself but until then, I will just gank what I can - with permission).

You know, personally, I'm fine with her refusing to wear the bondage-bikini. Yeah, it kinda sucks that she waited until she was presented with the costume before objecting to it — I'm kind of reminded of State & Main, where the lead actress suddenly decides she doesn't want to do nudity, even though it's in her contract, and she nearly shuts down the production.

But still, I get so sick of superheroines in improbably and impractically revealing costumes. Her catsuit for this film is a little unconventional, but for me, it beats the hell out of, say, Jennifer Garner's skimpy Elektra getup. And, you know, given that they're probably ditching 99 percent of the cartoon's content anyway, why is it in any way a betrayal for her to actually put some clothes on?

I am just more pissed at her prima donna antics that the movie itself. I probably won't see it until it's on pay TV and then it still won't be a priority but I am glad it's been made.

I do agree that most comic costumes are impractical or ridonkulous but then again the majority of female characters are drawn by men so what do you expect?

Ditto that last sentiment. :)

This is also one of the things that is getting me into comics, because there's a 4-part comic coming out from Dark Horse as (presumably) part of the marketing run-up to the movie.

Oh, and from the very first time I checked that out on IMDB, I went "...Celeborn? As Trevor?" He's so mellow and not emaciated.

I wish they'd had Peter Chung actually work on the script.

...okay just actually watched it. It looks... yeah. I'll still be seeing it early on, of course. But it looks so... normal.

And weirdly, they kept the character of Scaphandra, with the hands-for-feet, but changed her name to Sithandra, for no apparent reason. And (if you look at imdb) made Una into Aeon's little sister. (Which makes me wonder if that means they're using the translation plotline.) And and and.

Have you ever had a chance to interview someone involved in the making of a movie from a book or TV show, and ask them why such strange, seemingly-for-no-reason changes get made?

Hm. Not exactly in those terms. We tend to concentrate a lot more on people we think have really original and creative visions, which generally means a lot of writer-directors when we interview film people, which means not so much adapted material. And we don't interview all that many authors. And it's kind of a contentious question. But there are certainly people I'd really like to sit down and ask that question.
